Are you shure aboute that Arduino route?
Especially if you said that your not very good at programming.
I would go with the midibox 64/E. The main plus is about it that you could use only one core for two devices, the programming amount is allso smaller.

I'd love to go the midibox route but my soldering skills just aren't up to the task. If it were possible to buy pre-soldered/assembled midibox boards then I might consider it, otherwise I'll stick with Arduino. The reason being that there are already existing scripts that will pretty much do what I want and there are a few other people on here that are working on it as well so hopefully I shouldn't need to write anything from scratch; only modify stuff.

Also, I'm pretty decent at scripting in Autohotkey and I enjoy a challenge so I'm hoping I can pick it up pretty easily. From looking through existing Arduino code it doesn't look that hard?

Soldering isn't that hard, it just takes some practice.
Take a look over at Sparkfun for a some pointer, they've got a couple of pretty neat guides that helped me a lot: http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/213

Cracking video. I wish I could write code - but hell - it takes me to write English.

cheers matey - lol, well I wish I had your soldering/construction skills!

makes me think that we (as in, the djtechtools community) should combine our respective skills on a group project sometime... I'm always up for some collaborations or doing some work for someone elses controller.

Good work on the clone-drive, I mean, clone display.

I'd be in for a project.
I'm working on a controller too, which should start entering existence soon enough.
    I can:
Work in 3D (primary area of expertise) and make production drawings.
    Create pcb schematics and boards
    Solder
    Cook

i would love to be on board for a community-based collaboration, got some soldering/electronic skills, basic c-scripting and understandig.

more on the handcraft-side of things though to be honest.
