There are three quick examples of what a dead air mix sounds like. They're probably not my best choices, but they're what i could think of while on lunch without a sweaty crowd in front of me and a few drinks.

no problem. ultimately, any time you stop the music you're in danger of killing the energy in the room. So how can we make a mix like this work?

this mix uses a few major concepts.

    1. Harmonic Mixing: "But the two songs aren't even touching in the mix! Why does it matter?" Your ear, body, and brain all remember the last notes played. If the next song you play is out of key or jumps down in key their brains will understand it at least on a subconscious level, killing the mix. In fact, it's even more prominent when using this mixing style. When you take your mix up 1-2 semitones, you're increasing the energy of the room.

    2. You're turning that moment of silence into a beat. By using a breath in the length of usually a quarter note in the new time signature/bpm then you're setting a tempo for people even with the silence, thus making the silence musical.

    3. The pause is never EVER long enough for the body/room to lose the resonance of the track. The bigger the sound system/audience, the better this mix works. Because the longer the sound resonates in the room/bodies/memory, the easier this is.

    4. you're using their own expectations and energy against them. You naturally expect a soft intro after a soft outro. By feeding them the unexpected feeds their need to respond reactively instead of logically. (the natural reaction when a soft intro is heard after a soft outro, is to THINK. and thinking is exactly what you DONT want in this situation) And using their energy...they've just winded down. and you've just smacked them with energy. few things are as fun as seeing your dancefloor go "f*ck!! another one!" take a deep breath and get to dancing. hehe

it uses a few other concepts..but yeah, hopefully y'all get the drift.

hah. the best one is a bit off from my normal genre. lol

but surprisingly, it's a great example because it shows a genre transition, and the +2 semitone, plus a great shock once the song starts. it definitely gets your energy flowing as soon as you hear the mix.

the other ones are closer/more acurate to my weekly style. and of course i have genres/styles i just dont get a chance to play often anymore (good example, im still a subscriber to promo only mainstream, urban, alternative, and underground.)

btw, i should mention, if you notice silence-mix2.mp3 doesnt resonate as well. it doesn't start with as much of a HIT as the other 3 mixes...

keep that sorta thing in mind. the more shocking the musical blast the more it hits.

we're using what's called the Flecher-Monson Response curve. by creating dynamic range when the LOUD music comes back in, it affects the brain and makes it go "WOW!"
