On the software side install Onyx and run it on occasion.

onyx does the job for nothing..

or mackeeper does the job onyx does and more for about $40 a year (also has the ability to locate your stolen computer - and takes a photo of the person using it and emails it to you!)

its also a bit more user friendly than onyx
