Scratch N Pitch Tutorial

..
In this post about live loop recording inside traktor I was using a simple technique to re-voice static samples that I called Scratch N Pitch for a lack of a better term. Juggling cue points is a lot of fun but using the same sound over and over again can get really stale, so spice it up with some pitch variations.  Scratch N Pitch uses the jog wheel to make big changes in pitch, creating a scratching sound and re-voicing samples up or down an octave. Watch the video above for the full scoop on how to do it yourself.

Bust out your video Gear

There is only 2 weeks left in our digital dj contest so its time to brush off the camera and upload a video to YouTube. Not only is this possibly the best first prize I have ever seen but its a great opportunity for digital djs. We created this competition as a chance to expose the world to our readers and spread the word about the craft so this is your opportunity to show what you and digital djing can do. DjTutor.com did a great job when they created the first mini mix competition but their competition was dominated by cd players and turntables with digital gear heavily under-represented. This is your chance to show the world that controllers and software can not only compete but also do a lot more than people might imagine.

Dont just enter this competition for yourself, enter it for me and our community. I want to see 100 bad ass videos and at least 30k views by the end of the month. That will send a serious message that digital djing is here to stay. To help you in that goal here are 5 tips and tricks you can use in making your own video truly memorable.

The Future of Djing- Video

I recently moderated a panel in San Francisco during the AES convention about the future of djing. Those of you in countries around the world may enjoy the video above which captured the entire program. There is even a special surprise appearance from Toshi Nakama, the president of Vestax, where he gives his take on the future of djing. He brought up an interesting topic about the concept of finding music on the fly. This is one area that digital has not really improved at all and they seem to think the future is in how djs discover new music during the mix. Many other interesting topics came up and as usual we want to hear your opinion on the subject in the comments!

Some of the people that are in the video:

  • Ean Golden (Remix Mag, Dj TT, Dj)
  • Trevor Simpson (Energy 92.7 Dj and Producer)
  • Bill Mitsakos (New product development at Serato)
  • Toshi Nakama (Vestax Guru)
  • Kush Arora (Producer, Dj)

How to Hack a Keyboard

Moldover has made an appearance on MTV’s “How To Show”, showing off you how to turn an oxygen 8 or any other keyboard into your own expressive controllerist musical instrument. With only a handful of items you can easily find around the household and using the similar techniques to that used on his own Novation Remote-25 SL keyboard, Moldover shows in three simple steps how easy it is to become a controllerist armed with just a oxygen8 and a copy Ableton live.

Phase + Filter = Essential FX Trick

Dj-101 DIY Guide

Our new dj tech tools mantra for this week is:

“we go through the annoying stuff so you dont have to”

That certainly applies to my current attempt to offer a simple, inexpensive midi controller that most people could find useful. In the end I succeeded, but it required some serious investigation and re-thinking the fundamental concepts. This design is not meant to be sold or duplicated but rather to show the basic steps required in building your own midi accessory or moding an existing controller.

FX Fundamentals- Filters

In response to the handy feedback icon you see on your left hand side of this site I will be starting a “FX Fundamentals” series and go through many different uses of FX that you can use inside Traktor or any other software. First on the list is filters, the work horse of a dj’s effects arsenal. Along with a basic overview of the different filter options, I will go into multi mapping a single knob to many parts of a filter and layering 2 filters for even more effective results. Check out the video bellow for the scoop.

Super Knobs

superman-logo-5000767.jpgWith a limited number of physical knobs to control an ever increasing number of software goodies you need to find a way to get more out of your control surface. Using a single knob to control more than one parameter is one of the best ways to do that. A good example of this is the effects section of my VCI-100SE. Each effect in Traktor has 4 knobs and 4 buttons but my vci-100 only offers 2 knobs per effect. How can this be effective? Super knobs!
