Lets say you want a single button to select an effect or your crossfader to also act as an EQ fader. These kind of functions are just not possible with 99% of dj midi gear out of the box, but there are a small group of software programs that allow you to customize the way your midi gear works inside the computer. They are called Midi translator’s and today I want to show you how to perform one of the examples above using a translator called “Midi Pipe”. Midi-Pipe is a great tool that is free and easy to use but sadly only runs on Macintosh.

Bomes Midi Pro is an excellent piece of Midi translation software originally designed for the PC and now a beta has been made available for Mac users. DjTechTools has been working with Florian, the lead developer of Bomes midi pro, to help bring some exciting new functionality that will no doubt make Bomes Midi Pro an even better piece of software than it already.
We will be posting tutorials to help everyone to get to know this wonderful piece of midi translation software as time goes on so this is certainly one piece of software to keep a close eye on.
There are many things you can do with Bomes Midi Pro including creating smart-knobs to control your VST’s and change between midi presets thats are similar to, but more powerful than Traktors page functions.

In one of our tutorials 2 weeks ago I showed you how to layer 2 filters on top of each other and assign one knob to many different functions on those 2 filters. This “super knob” is a handy way to create wild sounds with minimal effort. In that case the desired effect required a Zone 92 LP filter on the deck and a HP filter on the master effect. So if you suddenly get inspired to create some wild filter builds in the middle of a set, you would probably want to have 2 controllers dedicated to that function. A button to engage the required effects and the super knob to tweak them out. So how do you make one button do that?

The basic principles of this technique will not require a rocket science degree. I know we usually just turn over the TKS file but in this case I would like to walk you through the basics so you can learn the principles yourself. I was asked the other day “why guitar hero”? The answer is simple, its a medium that the audience can relate to. The following Windows tutorial will get Traktor and Ableton all synced up and implement the concept of smart mixing into your set up. Some of you may be thinking, “What is smart mixing”? This is a good Question, and the Belvario Smart Mixer site answers it well. “”Smart mixing” is a term introduced by Moldover, a controllerist digital musician who uses a sophisticated software and hardware configuration that allows him to make fast changes to the mix with a minimum of control movement. One component of this is his “smart mixer” Reaktor ensemble, which makes it easy to do basic automated EQ mixing with a simple fader move in Ableton Live (in Live 7 it’s possible to do with only native audio effects).
You will learn how to:
1) Route Audio From Traktor and into an Ableton Live smart mixer.
2) Sync Abletons Midi clock to Traktor which will be hosting the master tempo
3) Allowing use of a midi controller in two programs at once.

As many of you know, I have been working on a special layout for the VCI-100 that is in the beta stages. You can download, test and give feedback on the current version here. In the mean time I stumbled on this crazy midi mod that got me REALLY excited (which is rare) so I wanted to share it. I mix externally with the vci-100 so all the central controls are dedicated to effects. However sometimes I need to quickly cut out a song and I have been using the input faders to do that by engaging the reverb to 100%. Each channel fader engages the reverb, fades in the mix and then at the top freezes the effect. So, if you quickly flip the fader up you get a really clean cut with a cool reverb tail. Then I was thinking instead of 2 faders, what if the cross fader did the same thing for both decks but in opposite directions? So when you move the cross fader to the left the right decks cuts out with a adjustable reverb trail and when you move it to the far right the left deck cuts out with a reverb tail?
