I've listened to drum'n'bass for over 10 years. Produced for a couple years full time as well. I love the music. I think it's as strong as ever, but has evolved away from the traditional dance music scene and towards a more popular format. It's not pop music, but it sits somewhere in between.

It's not the best material for a DJ because the songs really stand unto themselves unlike techno where the DJ can add so much through the mix. One of the problems going back 10 years is that many of producers were never good DJs and only played their own records. At the same time it never seemed like there were a lot of DnB DJs that weren't producers first. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. DnB has evolved to the point where the songs are very complex and musical, whereas a lot of techno and trance still feel a little a simple.

This is just my take and there are exceptions. Also consider I am a Californian and haven't seen how the scene has evolved first hand in the places where it's more popular.

Yeah i agree with you there, dnb toons dont make the best tunes for layering lots of tracks with (thats not to say it cant be done) - but i can say they are damn fun to do cue juggling, beat jumping and beatmashing too - ideally all at the same time
