Other than the recording stuff (iPod & some cables), newsletter signup sheet , & demo CDs, how do laptop DJs bring much less than this?

Firefox MIDI controller (Is that your VCI, or your version of it?)
7-plug APC surge protector/power strip (I take those to mobile gigs but not the club)
laptop brick, wall wart, Hum-Ex (don't know what any of these are)
    Small clipboard w/signup sheet (I don't have a newsletter)

(below all had more detail than most would list BUT certainly welcome info)
    Batteries, velcro cable ties, penlights
    Business cards, pens, thumb drive
    Demo CDs, flyers
Backup CDs (OS, apps, drivers, mixes, etc.)
iPod Nano & Belkin TuneStereo mic (for recording gigs)

Usually when we talk about your gear, typically we're speaking of the hardware but again, nothing wrong with your attention to detail

This is everything I take to a gig, especially when I don't know what their setup is. DJLP asked what I bring, and I just listed everything I fit into one backpack. I'm sticking with the Targus until something else that accommodates what I bring comes along. Clearly other people's mileage varies. I'm hopeful the Vestax will hold all this crap, because it looks very well made & protective.

A faderfox is a very small and astonishingly well-designed MIDI controller, difficult to get in the U.S. A laptop brick is the big rectangular AC transformer most laptops have. A wall wart is the big blocky plug many components use. A Hum-Ex is a ground loop eliminator (a gig-saver and I can't recommend it enough). I bring the 7-plug surge protector because I'm amazed how many venues -- even large ones -- just aren't prepared for someone to plug in a laptop & sound card.

The newsletter clipboard is always a judgement call. I make a living from my podcasts, so signups are important.

    word of warning:

carrying around bags with VESTAX or TECHNICS or etc is not a good idea. the possibility of theft increases.

i try to keep mine as discreet as possible. just a normal backpack (i got at a goodwill) with padding and enough room for the vci + laptop.

    but whatever works.

    nice looking bag!

i was previously using a large laptop bag but there wasn't enough padding for the VCI-100 faders... was tough to stick in extra foam and a bit messy anyway.

so going by ean's recommendation and a few other ppl, i ended up getting the UDG producer's bag (he's got a review on youtube). fits the vci PERFECTLY, along with my laptop, LOTS and LOTS of cables for whatever combination setup i was plugging into, my HD25's, my audio interface and laptop charger with plenty of room to boot.

brilliant bag! got it in black and the offset orange in the inside looks nice!
