what does invert actually do anyway? what is the purpose of using this option?

Glad it worked for you! Invert uses the MIDI NOTE OFF command sent by the controller to trigger whatever command is mapped to it instead of the NOTE ON signal. So in this instance, the NOTE ON (push down) loads your desired effects and then the NOTE OFF (release) sets the values. It's still technically 2 different occurrences for sending commands, but only 1 button push.
