So why is it that when new DJ's ask for help, they are told to learn to beatmatch before they do anything else?

Because otherwise they're going to look like idiots when they can't mix into whoever was playing before them.

Yeah, that too. I've seen people dj on laptops and the beats are out but because they've never learnt to beatmatch manually they have no idea it's happening.
