For production the maschine controls the maschine software which is basically a software MPC with some plugin support and a huge sample library. It is possible to write entire tracks using only maschine but most people will export to a DAW (logic, protools, live) to do a final mixdown because you will have a better mixer and more control over the tracks.
The x1 is really built for digital DJing with traktor. You can use it as a production controller in midi mode but personally I would go with something else. There's mixer type controllers for working with mixing decks and obviously keyboard controllers for synths. The x1 really doesn't help with either unless you are just controlling a couple pots. As a traktor control though the x1 is a fantastic piece of gear.
