This is starting to remind me of an interesting section Martin Atkins has in Toursmart about the effects different drugs have on your ears and brain in relation to making music, worth checking out.

I mean, I dont condone smoking and doing a whole bunch of work, but if you are very uninspired, it can help you take a break from being frustrated, and after you come down, you might find inspiration.

I get pretty much the same effect from running, but that's a lot more work.

I generally try to stay sober when I'm trying to make some music. There's been times when I put together a track after I've been drinking and the next day it turned out not to be so hot.

see, we are'nt talking about getting messed up AND making music. if you cant make music, go out for the night, hang with friends, have a good time (via any means you prefer). the next day you might find you have something on your mind. but it might be the next day after that as well (hangovers are a bitch).

I usually call either my parents or my girlfriend to refill my spirit with empty praise of how awesome I am.

Most of the good ones have been mentioned, I've found the best thing to do is new music, followed by caffeine. Taking breaks doesn't work that well for me because I get an irking to mix and then it's still bad.

New music is by far the best though.

a nice long bike ride or swim is good for clearing your head. if youve got a block thats from stress, that'll clear it. my left ankle is shit from childhood hockey/football so im too paranoid it'll fold if i go running
