Explain. Should a my book be laid flat, or stood up on one end? I only ask because I have had a mybook die on me, and have another that I hope won't die anytime soon. Are you saying that if it is laid flat, it is less likely to die???

technically a HDD can run in any position, it's when you move it around while it's running that you have trouble.
IMO when a WD HDD dies it dies because its a WD

Personally I prefer Seagate.
WD has many cool HDD testing apps....which can be useful.....
If it makin a noise and is not working....its BROKE in my opinion!
LOL
I have a Seagate 1TB External. It's making noises....but still works 100%.
I mean....its an External ...in a rugged case and all....but it all means shit if it gets banged around.
Only way is to be SUPER careful with it really.
Sideways....flat.....does not matter. As long as its in 100% perfect order.
Its ts being banged around a bit like mine....it might not be happy on its side.
Mine isn't.

personal preference/experience.
I work in computer returns and can safely say that for most comparable products seagate and western digital are pretty much on par as far as reliability goes.
Unfortunately WD don't have a service center in Australia so all drives have to be sent to singapore, where as seagate can be sent interstate.
A fairly common fault with WD is the power packs die. For this reason i usually suggest people use a standard 3.5" hdd and a usb - sata enclosure. This way if the power pack on the enclosure fails the drive can still be removed to get the data off. If you want to get the data off an external enclosure that was sold as all in one you have to void the warranty by opening the enclosure. Unless you have a spare power pack, but they change the plug type on those periodically so when a new model comes out you're stuck again.
No wonder i mix with computers, this post just reminded me how much of a geek i am .... BACK TO SETUPS!
