Do you need just a few more controls? Perhaps your wondering how hard it is to make your own controller? Then follow the steps in this 2 part series and build your first midi controller in about an hour for very little cash. Using only 8 electronics parts, a pre-made case and a DIY midi interface that is USB powered- you can build a controller and it wont require a degree in electrical engineering.

Hardware, software, your local grocery store- everything is going open source! Why not a dj midi controller? That’s what the guys at Aurora mixers thought, so they have created an open source mixer which you can build on or modify yourself.
Dj TechTools spoke with the Aurora Team last week about this new concept and this is what they had to say about the project: Continue reading ‘Open Source Midi Controller’

Unobstructed by corporate bulk and bureaucratic red tape the little guy seems to be consistently coming up with seriously dope shit. Take this gentleman here who was disappointed with the quality of jog wheel controllers that the current crop of dj companies with millions of dollars in development money had produced. So, as most people have been doing around here at Dj TT, he made his own- but better. Bookyakasha ninja midi master.

Since MIDI is becoming a major part of how many people dj it seems appropriate to understand as much as possible about the format. A few questions have popped up about midi latencey, how to reduce it and which cables or interfaces are the best to use. Instead of shooting in the dark we asked an expert, namely Florian Bomers- creator of Bomes Midi Translator, the tough questions about midi.

Brought to you by the makers of Mixed in Key, Platinum Notes (PN) is the tool you need to put that extra polish on your mp3s to make them really sizzle in the clubs. Some of the things you can expect are:
- Automatically adjust the tracks volume, so that every track has the same perceived loudness.
- Repair clipped peaks
- Adjust the dynamics of the music if needed
- Adjust the pitch of the tracks if needed, to make perfect harmonic mixes.
So, does it work as advertised? I’ve tried the software on numerous tracks, like Beatport MP3, ripped CDs, and on various musical genres, from pumping techno to disco. Let’s take those features one by one:

Perhaps you decided to hold off buying a new controller in hopes of waiting for the Vestax VCI-300? While not exactly a “better” controller than the VCI-100 it did have a few specific upgrades that could mean big performance gains. Namely, high resolution faders and jog wheels. Well, sorry to be the first bearer of bad news but you should not wait around any longer.

If your the guy who needs to get a little more midi control without sacrificing precious booth space or beer money you may have reason to rejoice. Korg has announced a clever line of midi controllers that will fit right in front of your laptop and theoretically perhaps sit on the same laptop stand

Bomes Midi Pro is an excellent piece of Midi translation software originally designed for the PC and now a beta has been made available for Mac users. DjTechTools has been working with Florian, the lead developer of Bomes midi pro, to help bring some exciting new functionality that will no doubt make Bomes Midi Pro an even better piece of software than it already.
We will be posting tutorials to help everyone to get to know this wonderful piece of midi translation software as time goes on so this is certainly one piece of software to keep a close eye on.
There are many things you can do with Bomes Midi Pro including creating smart-knobs to control your VST’s and change between midi presets thats are similar to, but more powerful than Traktors page functions.
If you were subscribed to the Bomes Midi email list you would have recently received this in your mail box:

Not sure about you but I am an 8 year old kid wrapped up in mans body. There-for djing is a professional excuse to get paid for playing with toys. As with all 8 year old kids, I like to twist knobs, move faders, physically interact with and impose my will upon these expensive toys. So if you take away all the fun things to dominate and just give me a touch screen, will I become bored and diss-satisfied? I suspect most people that call themselves Dj Techies fall into this same categorie, so I wonder how you feel about this new direction in technology interface design.
Watching videos like this one floating around lately are hardly inspiring but then again have you flown Virgin America lately? They have these terribly flawed but impossibly intriguing touch screens paired with the original version of Doom! How did we play that game for so many hours!?!? The graphics literally melted my eyes! Back to the point: while I have yet to see anything mind blowing performed on a touch screen, you cant help but want to play with them as well. As CDM reported, mainstream touch interfaces for windows users may not be that far off.
So will we cast aside our mamarian instincts and throw ourselves into the technological abyss of the pure computer interface? That much remains to be seen but I am going to hold onto my arcade buttons for now.
