wait, those are buttons? I thought they were capacitive knobs. next you’ll be telling me those ones on the side aren’t capacitive switches…

What does Mad Zach have to say about finger drumming with these pads?

What does Mad Zach have to say about finger drumming with these pads?

  • Mad Zach

the pads are not amazing because they are a bit too small and close together, but overall I’d still say its very powerful for drumming. They are still much better than a launchpad or the other livid controllers. the number of pads is really good and its nice that they are pressure and velocity sensitive

I can’t imagine this selling well at that price point. This does less than a quarter of what an Ableton Push can do, yet is three quarters the price. I’m sure most of that dough is going towards those capacitive faders…in which case I’m better off using a simple drum pad or midifighter and my iPad’s TouchOSC/Lemur.

No one ever mentions how shitty touch controllers are in the elements, ie dust and liquids. Like even if you have some condensation from your beer on your fingers when using them they start to glitch out. I used a Stanton SCS3 for a few years and went through needless pain and anguish. Also dusty environments, like festivals, really take a toll on touch controllers. Mine became much less responsive until it was cleaned, but impossible to clean during a set.

I think this is a great alternative to NI F1 for Traktors Remix decks! Still it needs a bit of testing.

what is the point of the top capacitive buttons, surely thats a fail, coulda had longer fader strips…

When will they understand that not everything needs to be replaced by ‘touch’…a decent knob and fader work fine for me…

Touch controls can jump values, plus it’s easier to pack and carry a device without knobs.

Device looks nice, but at that price point. I just don’t see it.

downside for me on the build of the unit for drumming is the noise it makes via the chasis. Im not sure what could have been done to avoid this but its almost like pounding on an empty box while in use. Also a negative for me is the latency when touching the volume slider touch sensor. Too quick of a finger (and i dont mean im being all that fast at it) and the slider really needs to play catchup.

While i do love the direction of this piece, and i would honestly love to have a launchpad (or extremely similar unit) in house all the time, this one doesnt quite hit the mark for my taste.

If i were, id for certain be right at your side my man! LOL Sorry i am not there. Really wish i were. I have been avidly watching videos on the L-BASE for the past couple days. Instead of just listening to that the (video presents) says about the device, im also trying to take in every aspect i can about it through the screen….. peek-a-boo =-)

Remember the pads are Velocity and Pressure sensitive.

More dough is going to the custom made FSRs under the pads than the capacitive faders (that part isn’t that hard to do).

Akai makes the Push and already has a great supply chain on FSRs – so they can do it much cheaper.

  • benz

I’d rather get this than a push. Ableton Live isn’t the end-all/be-all of music production, and this open-source alternative can be adapted to just about any production program

  • http://www.facebook.com/joemaffeimusic Joe Maffei

Until the Push rolls out officially, we won’t know how open and adaptable its code will be. Considering all the crazy stuff that’s been done with Launchpads and APCs, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is an official SDK for the Push.

  • benz

Is the ableton push open source? probably not.
this isn’t the same kind of controller as the push, so comparing the two is rather pointless

  • Ben Martinez

I’d rather get this. is the push open source? nope.
the base isn’t the same kind of controller, comparing the two is sort of pointless. the push is a dedicated Live controller.

  • onecheck

    Waste of money. Nothing special.

I just gotta give it up to Mad Zach for the professional description on the video :) Nice work man haha!

Review: Hot Hand USB Wireless MIDI Controller

When it comes to MIDI controllers, physical motion can be a hard type of input to understand and access - especially when it's completely disconnected from a physical controller. What if there was a controller that simplified motion - not quite as complex as Read More...
