Statistics can be read in many ways, especially when talking to a specific target market about specific topics. When you discovered that “nearly half of you also own Ableton. What does that mean?” Your response was “A lot more Ableton articles for starters!” …yes, but a qualified yes. It means they have it but it doesn’t mean they chose it because that’s what they wanted (or still use).

Of your sample group, you asked what people currently owned, not what they *WOULD* be interested in learning more about if they knew a little more about it *AND* when people are learning things, they’re not normally in a position to choose something other than what their instructor is teaching from (standards)… in a sort of “All things being equal, this is how you do this” sort of process. For a Mentor, there is a responsibility to not only to teach the basics, but to teach students how to think for themselves and when to foster ideas that are not the Mentor’s own.

When a blog features something a lot, anything that is neglected in reporting is seen as “not in the running”, “not worthwhile” or “somehow not worth a look at”, because you are seen as Experts in your field and the majority of the people coming to this site seek expert advice (students). I wonder if some people might choose to use other software (and hardware) if there were articles on them, not nearly as many but at least enough not to skew the self-fulfilling imbalance of “You report on ‘this’ because ‘this’ is what we use and we use ‘this’ because ‘this’ is what you report on” kind of circular-logic.

Maybe it’s not popular but I know there are a few just as worthwhile items that get less “time in the Sun” as other items and (to be fair) I think there should be a more diverse base of hardware, software and tips/tricks/advice.

I hope this didn’t come across as harsh, but I wanted to make sure that you knew you were doing very well and that there are a lot of people out there who just won’t say anything about what they like, stop liking it because you only cover what the majority likes and and those people need the occasional guide as well.

Interesting info!!!!!  I love this site.  I moved recently and have had a hell of a time with customer service from companies such as At&t, Aimco, even Traktor.  I have to say though you guys rock!  I feel so privileged being able to read the articles, email, Chris, Zach and the whole crew at DJTT.  I love the fact that all this information, and help is free.  This really is a great online community.  You don’t see stuff like this anymore.  Most people, just want to make a quick buck.  My only suggestion, is I would like to see DJTT do more custom work.  I really want a VCI 100 SE.  I wonder what a custom s2, or S4 would look like with DJTT touch.  In addition, I’d like to see some custom parts, like fader knobs, etc. in crazy colors.  I just got the S2 and it works so well.  However, for the price it seems very cheap in construction.  I’m tempted to build my own metal case for it.  Keep up the great work.

This was an interesting survey. I’m curious to see how well DJs can incorporate controllers, decks, and video. I love the demonstrations of the new Traktor S4 controller!

DJs will learn to evolve. I have so much experience with Ableton. Now, I’m getting back into Serato. Using Reason, Ableton, and Serato/Traktor together is a different animal.

I’m not surprised by the low amount of Serato users. It is to be expected since Serato has a higher cost. Can’t wait to get my hands on the new controller and learn some experimental midi techniques.

I think the survey of incomes could of been out of 100%, but I understand what DJTT was doing.

    Cheers!

‘Sometimes old timers get frustrated when we write articles on the basics but my feeling is: where else will the new DJs learn?’

I’m a part-time DJ. The rest of the time I’m an acupuncturist. I belong to a Japanese association that constantly hammers home to its members the importance of going over the basics. So that means when we have trainings, at least half the time we go back to basics and practise the things first year students do. This includes the 80 year old masters at the top of the association. The association journal reflect this…at least 20% of the articles go over what everybody thinks they know already. And so we all keep learning and deepening our skills.

I don’t think this forum need be any different. If every year, you got three deejays to write how they make a transition from one song to another we would all learn from them, even if it might seem like a basic topic. Even your epic 1% of megastar deejays would enjoy a read.

My point is that no one is too advanced not to profit from a basic article. It will either reinforce what you know or show you a new perspective.

    So keep ‘em coming!

  • LAGRIME.US

could you guys do a video of the s4 and mdi fighter in action and how to map it?
    would love the help

  • Qonstrukt

…and then I got to the end of the video, and I heard my name, and my GF who was watching with me was like: WTF!!??

And then a mail came in, at the same time, saying “Congratulations!” – Really, I’m shaking right now!

I’ll be sure to put it to good use guys, thank you very, very much!

    • Anonymous

Congratulations dude. I’m glad you are as stoked for it as I know I absolutely would be. Let’s not focus on whether 2000 names went to 50 and to a winner, but the fact that DJTT is just giving away an amazing piece of hardware for free, which could go a long way in making someone’s musical dreams come true.

      /cheese.

  • Adam

    Umm, I don’t see any video…
Just want to find out if I was one of the lucky ones.
    Where is this video?

    Good on ya Ean!
Glad to hear the info helped.
You have a stellar site here, so many thanks go out to you and your crew for the work you guys do to expand the realm of musical mixing in whatever manner it may be. Just got my VCI-100 and been mashing away. I also picked up some arcade buttons so soon enough I’ll be cutting her open, but not just yet. All the best with the new year ????????

  • Gbrown44

    I deman a recount…

  • El Cuco

because they were multiple choice answers. For example i use Traktor and Serato so i count a point on each one, if it was just single choice then everything would add up to 100%

  • http://www.ondasonora28c.com grabolio

Aren’t the % supposed to add up to 100%?

in 100% how can you have 34% using this, 75% using that, 28% using this other, and so on to add more that 100%?

    • bopbot

Not all DJs use a single software program.

Big props to all the DJTT staff

  • kaushik

DJTT please hold these kind of giveaways so i can have a greater chance of winning a s4 or at least a midifighter.

  • reason less serato folks

Have a feeling that the reason you had so many traktor pro folks will out your survey is because this is a sit geared towards traktor. nothing wrong with this since you guys sell this stuff for traktor, but if you want more diversity ya got to drop the pro traktor thing.

It’s like fox news trying to get me to watch and yet they don’t change their approach.

    I like both personally.

  • El Cuco

i use both serato ITCH and traktor pro so im not a fanboy of either one, however this site is “Traktor Oriented” which could have a huge impact on the results of “What DJ program you use”. That could be one of the reasons why not many serato users participated on your survey.

Some of the comments and bashing posted on DJTT are a turn off.
I am almost 40 years old and I feel like I am in a chat room full of hating teenagers!

If some of you saw Ean interviewing Richie Hawtin, Richie tell us that technology is evolving, in another 5-10 years turntables are going to be a thing of the past. Technics is stopping production of their 1200′s as a result of new lighter and portable instruments.

The statistics of this survey are not accurate. Total users who are either bedroom, club, or party djs add up to 267%. The total baseline should of been 100% so we can get an accurate percentage of those people who are making money as a dj; or we can assume that of the 60% who made their living as dj, not including those who play at bars, clubs, or weddings, etc, are selling their “mix-tapes” on the streets.

You need to produce another accurate survey of Electronic Dance Music. House and Techno Music were born from the same genre of Club music back in the early 80′s. There are so many sub-genre that were created of these two main genre are listed as follow:

House Music: Deep House, Tech-House, Soulful House, Funky House, Progressive House, Vocal House
Techno: Deep aka Detroit Techno, Acid, Dub-Techno, Hardcore, Electronica, Minimal, Trance, Psy-Trance.

The list goes on and on.

    • Anonymous

I agree. There’s too many sub-genres. But, at least the premise was good!

    • Spacecamp

      >Total users who are either bedroom, club, or party djs add up to 267%. >The total baseline should of been 100%

Sure, for a baseline that makes some sense – but what the high percentage indicates is that working DJs rarely are one trick ponies. Most play in the club AND a party, or bedroom DJ AND work in the club.
It’s more confusing – but that’s pretty much the nature of any survey or statistics.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Livewyr3 Justin Turner

100% of DJs are Bedroom DJs, because without practicing at home you will never have the skills required to get a club gig.

  • http://www.facebook.com/djpeterlo Plo

    Hey DJTT,

In the future, just to protect the people that entered (and also because you said you wouldn’t show the email addresses to other people), you may want to avoid putting the full email addresses up on the video. I’m just imagining a few of those winners receiving hate-mail or malicious software by envious fans.

Anyway, keep doing what you’re doing! I’m surprised and happy to hear that you guys can support a few full-time positions. It’s been fun watching DJTT grow.

Do you take free slave-labor interns?

  • Cray-Z5200

Just holding this survey is proof that you guys are as dedicated as ever to the community! As always, thanks for all the great work you’ve done for us :)

About the depth and technicality of the articles you provide, don’t worry too much if it gets ‘too techy’ or might seem incomprehensible. Sometimes explanations need to get technical!
If a reader is genuinely interested in learning about the subject at hand, he or she will try to absorb and understand the information you provide by any means necessary.

Besides, I honestly believe that inside every DJ lies a tech geek – if not, why would we spend time on gadgets and sites like these? ;)

  • diyei

Glad to see House ranked so high, in the other hand, only 20% like rock; that means 80% of pussies!

    • Dj ChrisWills

I agree with you lol house music owns cheers

  • Dang…

Guess I need to find an alternate controllerism site – hip-hop is not liked here. :(

I will particularly be interested in what happens with respect to possible pay-to-play portions of DJTT. My main concerns would be: 1) is it going to happen? 2) if it does, what will be covered there? 3) will the price be “worth it”? (for me, can’t answer that question for anyone else…) I have ideas about what I’d pay for and would like to see…would be interested in seeing what others thought about these questions.

  • MR DRAXX

Hey I forgot to mention on my survey that I would like to see more “what’s in your bag” videos

  • http://jasoncerna.com Jason Cerna

It’s good to see more Ableton Live users. I’ve been using it since Live 6 in 2005.

  • Jiggle Stick

I’m really surprised that so many others have Ableton as well.

Although it is a serious learning curve there is a real satisfaction with creating every sound and how it plays out, which could be later mixed with Traktor/Serato later too.

I’m thinking about getting Max4Live later, but that would be compared to dropping acid at church! Opening up crazy doors I mean.

  • alexio

    • Floyd

      +1 I agree!!

  • Mike

Something is completely wrong with this survey.

    Maximum allways is 100%, so how can you split 100% into 92% + 32% + 36% + + + + + like it shows up in each single chart.

So to me this survey isn’t worth anything, because it’s completely wrong. Do the math and add the numbers ;)

    • Andrew

In the bar graphs it’s not meant to be cumulative. They are the percentages of the people who took the survey who currently practice controllerism, have Traktor installed or DJ in their bedroom. Multiple options; some select one, some select many.
The pie charts make perfect sense.

  • Phaserjunkie

So who exactly won? I can’t watch the video right now :P

  • http://Www.mixcloud.com/djricey Ricey

Congrats people that won! DJTT should do this more often, it’s quite exciting stuff. In fact a Lil bit of wee came out haha. Also I’m a lil disappointed that I’m part of a small percentage of serato users. :(

    Not very fair!

Only fifty name’s were in a bowl?

Use a bigger bowl so all two thousand entry’s
    had a chance of winning!

    :(

    • ToOntown

Dude get over it, you wouldn’t have won anyway.

      • Anonymous

Everyone had the same chance of being chosen to in the bowl, ergo, everyone had the same chance of winning.

        • will

Im not bother if I won or not,
the fact is it wasn’t a fair way of doing it,

Maybe they were too lazy to cup up 2000+
          name tags for the bowl.

        • Stephan

Let me help you a bit with the maths, Will.
          1. Chance of winning when they made 2000 name tags = 1/2000
          2. Chance of winning with 50 name tags = (chance of being one of those fifty) * (chance of being the one getting picked out of the bowl) = (50/2000) * (1/50) = 1/2000

Surprise surprise, it’s all the same! It’s a completely fair way, everyone had just as much chance of winning.

    • ukneek

Everyone had the same chance, the 50 picks were done at random, as well as the picks from the bowl. Thats as fair as possible.

  • http://soundcloud.com/directorate Directorate

the do you make money from djing chart was…odd. it was % of a %

    • Charlie

Some deductive reasoning would have led you to the conclusion that the % to % was a range of values of how much of their income was from DJ’ing. For example if I put 15-25%, that means that DJ’ing reels in apx 1/4 of the total income I make.
