Over the past few years, we have shown everyone a fair number of controllerism tricks and techniques on this site. Through that time, everyone has consistently expressed a desire to see them used in the context of a real dj set. While it’s not realistic to beat juggle for 30 minutes and keep a dance floor rocking it IS realistic to sprinkle the mix with some amazingly fun routines.  In the video above I condense a 30 minute set into 10 minutes of quick mixes that use controllerism as a tool for creative transitions.

Read on after the jump for the full 20 minute mix, and a contest in which you can win the midi-fighter controllers.

MIDI_FIGHTER CONTEST

To make things interesting, and really create a lot of variation, here are the rules:

1) Take any of the songs used in the video (set list bellow)

2) Mix them together in your own creative fashion (minimum 2 minutes, max 10)

3) Add it as a video response to my mix before July 31rst.

4) I will pick, announce and post the winning video next month

5) All gear or software is welcome but I like creative uses of controllers.

The winner will win the 2 hand-signed Midi-Fighters used in this set.

THE MIX

Originally we shot a full 20 minute mix but it was just too much video so I only published the first 10 minutes. If your interested in checking out the full deal, download it bellow. I fully admit that mixing this fast is purely for show and not really practical or desirable in a club. (I personally am a big fan of letting songs play all the way through) However, for the purpose of a performance video- I wanted to show as many mixes as possible and make it fun to watch.

Download the full 20 minute mix

Awesome. That’s one mixer and two homemade controllers! :D Great video. Do you plan on making something like this for the VCI-100SE? Or is it already somewhere on the your youtube channel?

  • Clouse

    Great Video!
I especially enjoyed the part from 10.45 – 12.03 in the full mix. The songs just complimented each other so very well and created this incredible energy. Exactly this energy is my motivation to keep mixing. Thanks!

P.S. Sorry if that sounded cheesy, just felt like speaking my mind =)

hey totally sick. personally i think this only works if everything is totally prepared before the set? am i right? i mean it would be doable but im sure that lyrics would clash and it would rarely sound good…. anyway for me doing this kills the element of reading the crowd and spontaneous mixing,,, thoughts??

  • http://soundcloud.com/electrolight Electrolight

damn I’d give the contest a try if the songs were a bit more my genre, but I don’t think I’ll make any chance dj’ing this music :P

2manydjs do it all the time, and they’re up there with the best. Their Coachella set was insanely good. they don’t however mash up this quickly.

I think if i saw this sort of thing in a club I would be wowed by the technical skill but wouldn’t probably be dancing :p. I suppose it’s a bit like scratching in that way. Slower mashups like the before mentioned pre-prepared 2manydjs sets are definetely danceable.

  • Death by Digital

    @Mr.Nicklebe

yeah but 2manydjs are such a big name, so they will dance to anything the play, i mean some of there remixes i dont like but becuase its 2manydjs many people say OMG 2manydjs wow but i bet if they didnt know it was 2manydjs they would say it was shit, do you know what i mean??, i think your right about the slower mashups though they are definatley danceable as anything else,,

  • R3 Bonaire

cool performance, but like other replies it won’t dance a crowd.
Also i believe this can never work if you do a live performance where one might need to adapt to the crowd and ambience, this needs lots of preparation and is difficult to switch to alternatieve play options…. it could work as a cool opening.
But Thumbs up for all the great work….and mapping.
    Master bo ta EAN.

  • Mastah Lee

Yep, this is the future of DJing. I use a Launchpad + Ableton, but the theory is the same. Really sick mixing chops.

As others have said, this is an excellent demonstration but wouldn’t work to get a crowd dancing, but would make an excellent intro or mid-set solo. However, the statement that these things need to be completely planned out beforehand and aren’t adaptable isn’t exactly true if you put enough thought into processing your tracks. I use Ableton and every time I add a new song to my “crate” I align it with a beatgrid, cut it up into sections (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, etc), and assign cue-points before saving it as a separate file. Then when I play my set, I load up each track on-demand and everything is on-the-grid and laid out in an intelligent fashion and I’ve been able to switch up my tracklist on the fly with very good results. Obviously, I pre-plan anything I rapid-fire through, but switching up tracks every minute or 2 isn’t hard to do on-the-fly in this system.

If I’ve got time this month, I’ll have to give this contest a shot. Might even throw a new version of my Ms. Pinky M4L patch into the mix.

  • http://www.dj-nvidia.com/ Dj Nvidia

I can’t believe people don’t read. (wait, actually I can). It literally says:

“While it’s not realistic to beat juggle for 30 minutes and keep a dance floor rocking it IS realistic to sprinkle the mix with some amazingly fun routines.”

So basically its just a tech demo. Meant to show you the possibilities that are out there.

During a full 2-4hr set, you might do some of these once every 30min, and even then you might do it for 30sec – 1min.

Guys it’s not meant to be a full set…

Ean already addressed this when he said
While it’s not realistic to beat juggle for 30 minutes and keep a dance floor rocking it IS realistic to sprinkle the mix with some amazingly fun routines.
I’m not trying to be mean and I certainly hope I don’t come across that way. This video is kind of like what they do in a car commercial. They show the car driving on a twisty road, no doubt breaking the speed limit, in the rain, crossing the double yellow lines. It’s not to suggest that you do the same, they even say “Professional driver on a closed course,” but rather to show case what the car can do in a short thirty second span.

Ean is doing the same thing. This video is a tour de force for the midi fighter. It’s not meant to be copied exactly. If an “up and coming DJ” was caught coming routines they’d be toast. But rather it’s meant as a base point for you to build your own routines.

Ean is the Bob Ross of DJing. He shows you a beautiful routine, then shows you how to do it, and then invites you to do your own version. Lets paint some happy midi-fighters

Ean, it sounds like there’s more to that 20 minute mix. Is there?

  • Lord Geronimo The Great

Sounds like “Phil” has some unresolved issues – for the record, I have played this micro-set for at least 15 non -musicians/non-DJ’s to show what I am aspiring toward; the unilateral response is “WOW”…

Great stuff Ean – I am personally a big fan of the “kitchen sink” approach to mixing – this is (to me) what controllerism is all about!!! The ability to mix such varied genres/moods et al is what I am looking to do myself, and it demonstrates the fundamental responsibility of a DJ – play a wide variety of music and demonstrate that almost anything can be funky if shown some TLC (in the right hands)…

  • SirchOne

    @Lord Geronimo The Great

Couldn’t had said it better myself! EXACTLY what i was thinking.
That’s the biggest shit i have ever heard and seen on youtube. Midifighters are not djing anymore. Fuck autosync
Yeah, and DJs aren’t musicians because they don’t play an instrument. My sarcasm and your dogmatic stance aside, you are sort of right. It’s not DJ’ing anymore, it’s moving into a hybrid instrumentation / “music production” model with positive trending and early results.

Besides, I like the Midi Fighter’s design very much because when some loudmouth like you somehow claws his way to the booth or stage to give me grief about what I’m doing from some hokey fundie position, it’s just the right size to pick up and smash him in the face with it. Vocal mic stands also make useful deterrents, YMMV.

Can anyone tell me how to record the video screen of Traktor? (Mac OS) And what do you use to combine the two? Is there a Mac app that comes with the system I can use? I’m new to video editting.

I’m assuming I just want to record my mix in Traktor and do three layers one of the screen video, one of me mixing and one of the audio. Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks

  • http://www.pierbover.com Pier

The midi tricks, effects, and music selection is pretty cool and also technically interesting… BUT Ean you really need to practice your timing over a metronome…

Specially the first seconds of your performance are really off time. And not in cool way like jazz musicians do all the time with ritardantos and such…

Also I think this is not a good example of a real life application… nobody would dance on this.

Anyway this is a great performance which needs more work, but I could totally see it in the DMC championships.

@djelevation – try iShowU, it’s lightweight, works great for screen cap. You can use an RCA –> 1/8″ cable to plug into the line input of your Mac, and iShowU will record audio from the input. This way, you automatically capture your video in sync with your mixes.

Just wanted to ask: Ean, during your “Renegade Master” vocal glitches around 1:40, is that on a third or fourth deck that’s hidden from view? Based on the waveforms, it doesn’t appear that it’s loaded into deck A or B.

    Cut your hair, you hippy!

    :p

I’m curious to have a play and see how these techniques apply to longer sets. I’m mostly spinning psybreaks at the moment, and some of the more convoluted mixes are awesome if you’re using them every 10 minutes and want to keep the energy levels up.

  • theory28

so, ean, what are the current standings? the contest is coming to a close.

  • deaconjonez

dj three6t saw your video your set is tight dude really stoked on ean and your set
Are we only allowed to use the songs listed or can we add our own?
Seen this asked a few times. I feel as though it’s clear you are to use “any of the songs used in the video”. But many have interpreted that to mean ANY song they want. So I feel there’s a little clarity needed.

Too bad soo many entries do have other songs then listed. I thought it would be a great challenge to mix these songs instead of your own favorites. The tracks in the list are hard to mix, don’t ‘officially’ match (different genres etc) and therefore it is even more cool if you could mix them like Ean, instead of using tracks you’ve practicing for hours on..

Com’on be creative and use the tracks from the list, don’t make excuses using other tracks because your skills are so cool or saying ‘you don’t care’. It’s a contest, stick to the rules and make your own awesome remix!
