Midi Fighter Contest Winning Videos

Last month we started a contest that challenged all of our readers to use the samples from the video above and re-arrange them in their own unique way with any controller. It was my hope that people would be inspired and take the clips to an entirely new level. I am very happy to share the winning entries with you. Several people came up with arrangements and performances that might have even smoked mine!

Winner

I love this video because the timing is clean and the passages would be very hard to pull off. Most importantly this video had one of the best musical arrangements. Each section has its own unique flavor and each verse flows very cleanly into the chorus. Overall a solid, musical performance with 4 decks and one controller- exactly what I was looking for!

The Winner will get a brand new Midi-Fighter DIY kit, which are finally going to be back in the store by June 10th.

Runner Up

The drumming here is really good, and I really like the chopped up hip hop feel. The only thing it lacks is the great musical arrangement from the video above. One small suggestion would be shortening the performance. I would have wrapped it up at 1:10 with a nice finish for a solid video.

Loved the Piano style!

This guy killed it with the intro. Amazingly fast 2 handed playing. Someone get him some arcade buttons though- because those BCD buttons must have been a pain on the wrist.

This is exactly what I expected!! Awesome juggle routines in very different hansa, and they had 4 distinctly different ideas.

I got a small routine patterened after the “aerodynamic/Planet Roc routine Ean had a whileback. . .but I’m on SSL.

I appreciate why you gave 1st place to the top vid from a musical arrangement point of view, but it has to be said Skinz’s vid (runner up) is the only one hear that would be very hard to replicate.

I can help you with that if you want. I have remapped my Oxygen 49 to have 2 octaves of keys mapped to key change. So you can play a loop like a synth, musically like LVO, or you can use it to make a song more interesting melodically. I used key instead of pitch shift like LVO did in his vid for the loop synth. etc.
At the beginning of LVO’s vid he used 3(or4) decks with the same song and same cue point with different keys already set to make a chord, after playing them, he then just loaded the decks with the other songs when he was done. I assume he used “reset mixer settings” when loading a new song to put the key back to 0.

Sorry after a third look at the video he might have key mapped on that first part to play the cues, but I would think he mapped it like that just for the juggle.

These were all good, for the most part, but I do have one MAJOR qualm with the results. This was suppose to be a midi-fighter competition and I only see ONE, and it received an honorable mention. Other than that, great job guys, I tried with my MF and just couldn’t readjust to playing the MF in that style.

Digitsl Demon, it was a 4 song, 4 cue point juggle contest. Any controller and any software was ok to use. The prize was for a midi fighter, and the fact that a midi fighter would be perfect for the format made it a midi fighter contest.

It was a competition to WIN a midi fighter. It specifically said that any controllers could be used. Personally I wouldn’t be super happy with the results if someone used a midi fighter to win another midi fighter.

Congratulations “dual citizen” – some serious thought went into that routine and it took some dexterity to pull off some of those pad combos.

My personal favourite was Skinz’ runner up vid – it may have been a more sprawling, organic affair but I’m glad you didn’t wrap it up at 1:10 like Ean suggests as it would of lost some great moments that that really opened my mind – I was surprised by how you held my interest for seven minutes with four short samples and I had no idea half of that stuff was even possible on Traktor.

Similarly, LVO caught me off-guard with that keyboard and chords routine – lots of stuff in there I didn’t think was possible of would never of thought of.

Overall, this contest has been the best posting on this site in ages – the reason I “tune in” to Techtools is for the sharing of innovation and creativy not to read 150 comments along the lines of; “Traktor sucks, SSL for life!” vs. “Traktor rules, Serato’s for losers!” …apart from anything else, it’s not the software that maketh the man.

Roll on the next contest!!!

P.S. – Ean, how about a future contest focusing directly on innovation or new ideas – something to really get people pushing the boundaries of all this wonderful technology piling up around us?
