One Extra Tip

Traktor can only have one BPM per song so that means that you can only automatically sync one of the 2 loops if they were set at different BPMS. For example in this video the outro loop was 94 bpm and the intro was 89. For this reason I recommend you set the BPM of the song to match your outro loop and manually beat match the intro loop. Why? Because you have a lot of time to adjust the timing of the intro loop before the audience ever hears the track but with the outro loop- it has to be right almost immediately.  There is no time to beatmatch as the tempo will be changing right up until the moment you need to start mixing.

Good Job Ean… Always nice to see practical mixing advice!

• Dougan

Yeah lost the audio aswell, was really liking it tho.

• Steve

Yup, audio drops out. I am sure Ean will repost.

• Tomspace

These mixing vids are amazing!!! They help us new guys a lot! Thanks EAN!!!

This looks really promising, looking forward to the audio being fixed ;) What I’m curious about is how to get the two different BPMs working, I guess he sets the first loop and stores it, then changes the BPM along with the grid for the third loop, doesn’t that throw the first grid off? Or since the loop is stored it still works? I guess we’ll wait and see….

• Vom

Can I be… cheeky.. Hey Ean can you upload the prepped tracks on here???

• http://www.eangolden.com Ean Golden

Sorry Guys- there was a rendering error. I re-uploaded a new version without the audio issues and when i get time tomorrow we will post the tracks with cue points.

• Paulyphonic

I’d like to know the same thing as DJ Professor Ben:

The past mixing techniques videos have definitely been the best vid’s posted on here. I’m looking forward to plenty more.

• Citizen_Insane

This kinda blew my mind. Mixing some Led Zeppelin with Pendulum… works crazy good when you do it like that and, heck, with those tracks I’m sure the crowd would just go absolutely wild.
Time to import my Zeppelin to Traktor to test this out.
Keep the great vids coming.

This is exactly the reason why I first got in to dvs and then fell in love with digital dj’n, having access to any genre of music on my decks was a dream come true. Stuff like this really give’s your set a unique edge, the joy of having all the bpm/key all laid out in front you make’s it very quick and easy to find interesting match’s. I’m desperate to warp all my best old ska, funk and indie so I can play around with it more.

For any one that like’s random live remixs check out my set by clicking on my name above, using the same method as Ean I’ve shoehorned Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and many other old old records in to my set. But because effects like beat slicer, gater, masher…. are reliant on accurate beatgrids I’m really looking forward to the mentioned Techtools post on warping!

Good tutorial, but this is exactly why I use Serato. This whole process is done in seconds instead of using half an hour in traktor. And none of that pesky grid, either.

• NUJAK

Slammin! Ian is getting to be the guru on that Vestax thingy.

• Guy G

As always, great stuff, Ian!
I am confused about one thing. You ended up locking the track at 95 BPM, which means the entire grid is now locked at 95 BPM. This means the intro loop (at 86.75 BPM) should be out of sync with the grid. However, when you show the routine at around 7 minutes into the video, the grid is perfectly aligned with your intro loop. Did you change the BPM back to 86.75 before you locked the grid?
Keep up the great work. You are changing the world of DJ’ing.

• Mr.Nicklebe

Seriously just creamed my pants watching that end sequence you did. The beat juggling was AWESOME!. Might just give this ago. But I think I would rather learn how to do some custom edits.

I know it seems like a long time but it takes a while to set perfect loops.

Technically you cant actually do what we did in this video in serato. I could have set 2 loops manually and adjusted them by ear. This would have taken seconds as well but to really get it right- you need to know exactly what tempo each section is and then set loops that are perfect lengths for that BPM. Otherwise its almost impossible to get perfect loops and in serato your just guessing without grids.

I did leave out one important detail that everyone should know about the BPM differences and have updated the post with more info that should answer your questions

Wow, nice. I like that you added a mix demo ad the end. I love that you added DnB in it (does Bento has something to do with that?).
I’m not sure about storing the “OLD” BPM into the comment. I’d rather store the BPM (or even better, the pitch offset) that needs to be set (relative to the outro BPM) so that the intro would be in time. (I’m not sure even I understan what I just said).

• http://turntablepoetry.com/blog dj professor ben

nate — setting the second grid has no effect on the first, but *changing the bpm* does, since it affects the bpm of the entire track.

• http://turntablepoetry.com/blog dj professor ben

@Ean – you say to “set the BPM of the song to match your outro loop and manually beat match the intro loop.” Do you actually re-set the BPM on the fly while playing? In other words, manually beatmatch the loop and then set the grid, and then re-set the grid when it’s time for the second loop? Or just leave the grid set for the BPM of the outro loop and go ahead and work with the intro loop with a grid that is off? Obviously in the video the grid looks on in both instances.

• http://www.djmoonie.co.uk DJ Moonie

The other thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that these transitions work, because in the case of the pendulum track, is more or less twice the BPM of the led zep track. You can see that traktor has either got the BPM wrong (87), or ean has deliberately halved the bpm using the grid commands.

@prof ben.. once the grids are set, you dont ever need to adjust them, but you have the manually beatmatch the loops because traktor can only display one bpm for the track, and as this track ‘wanders’, it actually contains multiple bpms.

But because you know in advance that the grids are good (irrespective of BPM), the point is that you know they will not wander when looped.

Ean, you just showed me I have my mixer set up all wrong. I was using the tiny Ø 0,4cm buttons on my 4D to cuejuggle, I’ll use those chunky arcade ones now. That sounded like loads of fun. Keyboard/electricpianoguitar reinvented sort of speak.
Love how you covered everything and threw in one of the nicest mixes I’ve heard in a while.
props

EAN!!!!!! Love this but you have to answer me this… do you always play with your volume faders all the way up? I know you were tinkering in the lab for this video but do you find the audio gets distorted at full throttle like that? Do you turn the limiter on in preferences? You are throwing out some amazing cutting edge techniques, can you provide some more technical details for the nit-pickers like me? Thank you, good sir, in advance.

• Zac Kyoti

Yeah, for people who are asking, only one tempo is saved with Traktor, so changes to the BPM after setting the intro loop will result in a grid that doesn’t align with that loop. BUT, Ean saved the loop points, so the loops will still repeat perfectly. Thing is, the tempos of the intro and outro loops are different, so you run into some problems. Namely, you’ve gotta change either the grid BPM or the tempo on one of them to mix with another track. Personally I think I would store the outro BPM in comments and save the intro loop BPM with the track. That way, you can mix the rock track into an outgoing track without having to do anything special. Let the track play, then set the next incoming track’s tempo to the tempo saved in the comments of the rock track.

Of course with any method, you lose sync capability on one of the loops. Ean mentioned he forgot to say something about this technique – I have a feeling this might be it.

Ean, can you clarify?

Fantastic tutorial, have sent the link to many of the crew. I’ve been watching many Ableton tutorials on how to work the internal warping system along the same lines. Totally applicable, didn’t really grasp the idea of loop lifting in this fashion but it makes great sense. Learning how to use EFX is one thing, and to me, there’s a line in the sand about being a real DJ performer / producer that involves cutting and planning ahead to drop original mixes in this fashion. Can’t thank you enough – compliments on the production value by the way. If you’ll excuse me, I need to go get my hands on an iPad and smash a 1/4″ mono cable into the screen and plug the other end into my guitar so I can claim to be the “World’s First iPad Guitarist”.
I think I would store the outro BPM in comments and save the intro loop BPM with the track.
This way, you need your track pitch fader at 0% in order to match the written-down bpm. Which usually aint the case.

• http://turntablepoetry.com dj professor ben

@DJ Moonie – thanks! This is really great stuff. As for the BPM being wrong, it’s not really wrong, it’s just that if you analyze say with limits of 78-155 BPM, which is what I use, drum n bass tempos come out in the 80s rather than the 170s. It’s helpful if you mix different genres into drum n bass, eg hip hop. I always analyze dnb that way myself even though it’s half of what might technically be right.

this stuff is so much easier in ableton (not saying traktor doesn’t have many plusses, personally i think ableton is better for more inventive digital djing as their aren’t really any constraints as to what you can do.

I think it’s a good idea to use both. Prepare your rock tracks in ableton by warping them, and then bring them into traktor. It shouldn’t take longer than a minute or two to warp, import, grid, cue up tracks.

• iLLtalian

Sweet can’t wait for you to up the tracks!
This way, you need your track pitch fader at 0% in order to match the written-down bpm. Which usually aint the case.
Your’re right – so then the tempo “offset” percentage (the difference between the two BPMs), would be the way to do it. So you can sync the first loop, then no matter what tempo it ended up at, if you first sync, then offset the next track by the written down amount it should (theoretically) be a perfect match.

• http://turntablepoetry.com dj professor ben

@Priscilla – not sure I would agree about warping the rock tracks in Ableton. I guess it depends on the track and how much warping it needs, but warping can sound really forced and artificial. I guess if you’re just using a short loop anyway it wouldn’t be too noticeable but I’ve definitely heard some horribly mangled tracks that are better left alone, tempo drift and all…

• http://www.digitaldjtips.com Phil Morse

I’ve always loved mixing straight rock into house and vice versa in my sets, and for me it is as much about picking a small, tight loop with no beat (the four chords at the beginning of Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit” for instance, or the guitar riff from “Fade Out” by Radiohead) as much as anything else, and teasing this over the incoming track or even tracks…

• jppoirot

Are you going to upload the track with the cuepoints ???

• http://web.me.com/jasonking8/J450N_N4ME/1NTR0.html J450N N4ME

Just a thought, but couldn’t you just import the same track twice with 2 different tags and grid one out for the early loop and one for the late loop? Then you could (gasp) use the 3rd or 4th deck as a sampler…just a thought.

Just to let you know, I’ve raised this as a defect with Native Instruments. Having a single BPM per track for gridding is not acceptable for professional use.
