Try upgrading to at least Traktor version 1.24 or higher. Otherwise try re-loading the tsi.

Oooh maybe the runner up prize can be a Crane Stand!!! :)!!!

I vote robadubdub for a Midi Fighter even though he’s about 16000 views shy.

Dude did an amazing job with just a lappy and needs a proper controller!

As we near the end of this contest:

it would not be fair to change the rules at the last moment, so.. the highest views will still be the video that wins- although we may also do a runner up prize now as well.

HOWEVER-

In the future, this contests will be structured very differently with a more balanced system that offers everyone the same opportunity. Thanks for the constructive feedback.

• JJ Jungle

Actually RCUS my comment wasn’t directed at you. Your entry is pretty friggin badass!!! It was more aimed at doubledutchdj who has also been crying of the forum. Your take was super inspiring..in fact it was the newest reason in the long list of excuses on why I should NOT compete. My fav so far.

Thanks for the words of inspiration. Who knows, I might grow a pair in the next couple of days/hours.

• RCUS

ooooh no!! i totally didn’t want to come off as whiiiny!!

am i a whiny JJ?

crap. I just re-read my posts….totally whiny.

sorry bout that =) i just want to see some talent and get Ean to post all the vids so I can watch them and pick my favorite of the contest.

JJ you should totally post your submission for the fun of it, you can’t win if you don/t play….umm, well, you can’t win at this point but we’d still like to see more vids!

• JJ Jungle

I just wanted to give props to all of the entries of this contest (even the whiny ones). I myself started out with the greatest of intentions, but in the end am too chickenshit to put myself out in to the youtube-isphere.

There have been some great submissions though, and I want to thank everyone for giving me some needed inspiration. DJ Techtools Rocks!

hey Ean,

Great idea for the comp, please keep them coming.. could you create a video on how to re-map these to the launchpad? I want to use the bottom right corner of it for the 4×4 grid, ive been trying to re-map the settings but im getting a bit lost.. can you do a tutorial video on this?

Cheers

• RCUS

Hey Robbadobdob! Ahh i’m so frustrated. My only connection to this contest has been through my stupid iphone that’s on the fritz right now (just recently moved and have no other way to connect to the WiFi in my apt; and I don’t want to bug my new roommate again for her lappy). On top of it, i’m at work and my job blocks youtube. I think i’m getting a netbook this weekend, yay!

If i remember correctly you were the guy using the laptop and keyboard right?! If that’s the case I actually thought it was ballz man, great job for what you had to work with, and one of the best in the competition! You’re going to be on fire with a MiDI Fighter for sure! I would say you were my top pick if it weren’t for the fact that I haven’t seen all of them (I think). Thats why I was poking Ean to release his compiled list of all the contestants.

I saw your comment on youtube with my phone, i just can’t reply right now with it for some reason….thanks for the shout out!

To answer your comments from YouTube:

For the Ableton effects, go to the Abe message boards and look up Tarekith effects, Jethroe effects and Lucifer VST. I give Tarekith, Jethroe, and Steve Duda (creator of Lucifer) alot of respect for reliable effects that do a great job of not causing huge peaks in your music.

To be honest I have NO IDEA which effects I am using from those guys anymore because some of them i’ve used stock and others i’ve taken apart. I’ve also just used alot of the stock Ableton ones as well, so like reverb, frequency shifter (used on the Renegade Master samples in the second half of the vid), and grain delay.

Lucifer VST on the other hand i’ve tweaked slightly and its pretty much just about controlling whats in the program via the APC40 and MIDI Fighter. You can definitely do similar things with beat repeat, but Lucifer seems to have it’s own flair. Also check out Gross Beat and Artillery for similarly different programs =)

If you do end up getting Lucifer, please get in touch with Steve Duda at xferrecords.com He still sells the software for $100 and I think he is deserving of the dough and credit!

thanks again for the review!

• Robbadobdob

RCUS your entry is sick, if could reply to my comment that would be great.

• RCUS

@Ean,

are you going to release a master list that you somehow compiled of entries for this contest? I feel like maybe I’m missing out on some peoples stuff due to their vids not showing up for one reason or another.

@ everyone else, I feel bad for some of you guys because there seems to be some unfair play going down ie: certain individuals with 9000+ views, 4 star ratings and clearly not the most skill, in the pool.

@Ean again, I really do appreciate you putting the contest on and understand the complications on your end. It’s not my style to throw people under the bus, but I’m sticking my neck out here for a bunch of others that obviously put more time and effort in. I really do think there should be some kind of filter put in place for THIS contest, and I’m not just saying that as a late entry. Hell you can disqualify my entry if it’s interpreted as a clever ploy to change the rules last minute, I just really want to see some talent and I think we may just be seeing some clever marketing instead!

Totally understand that it’s not easy to regulate….

• RCUS

WHOOOHOOO! My roommate saved my ass, at least now its up (i think). I can’t view on my iphone though? anyhow, check the bald head fat neck stylings……

Hi Guys, cool contest.

I like Robbadobdob’s entry best from what I’ve heard this far but I also enjoy seeing people just having fun with the contest. The dub-step thing is quite good from a conceptual point of view.

I’m not too happy with the most views = first price way of judgement either but what can you do. It’s a quite straight forward way of judging and Ean already wrote about a new way of judging upcoming contests.

Currently quite busy, but I might give it a shot on the weekend.

Cheers, Rene

The more this ontest goes on the more ridiculous i find this judging system. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record but it just seems ridiculously obvious that this system was always gunna fail.
Firstly you didn’t take into account that some videos were going to be uploaded later than others and their for have a disadvantage. I mean no offesnse to however put this video up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkkjSIpIZnQ&feature=related but they obviously didn’t take the competition seriously. Me on the other (not saying i think mine is the best i think immuzikations is) took this quite seriously spent an hour or 2 making mine, but was slow on the uptake and didn’t see the article until a couple of days after it was posted. Im quite proud of my results and have worked quite hard to promote mine. Yet still that video has more views than mine, not because its better, just because it was put up first. Its not too late to change and i think it would be a lot fairer for the dj techtools staff to judge it.

Rant over

Ok- as I said before, this one is based on views but since people want to see a bit of judging I will point out 2 videos that I think did some really cool things. Props to everyone that has entered so far- way to put yourself out there!

Video 1:

great beat fills and excellent remix structure.

Video 2:

• http://turntablepoetry.com dj professor ben

What are you guys using to make your videos? I recorded the audio in traktor and am adding it to the video in Final Cut but there’s got to be an easier way; this is going to take over an hour to render a 5 minute video; all I did was swap out the soundtrack. I knew there was a reason I wasn’t a video guy….

• Nicholas

“You must use the songs in my video”

I don’t mean to snitch or anything…but i noticed that one of the response videos actually also uses another song and i dont think it uses one of the songs u mentionted to use at all :\. Also…the video was uploaded on december 2009 lol…way earlier than february lol :/.

One more thing: i posted my video as video response, and it said it needs to await confirmation…should i do anything else or i just have to wait for you guys to confirm it and allow my video to be posted as video response?

• http://www.immuzikation.com Immuzikation

• Nicholas

Just uploaded my personal mix as video response:DDD…”DJ Altered Ego etc etc” hope u guys will like it…

• Nicholas

Hey looks like tonight im feelin pretty dumb so i got one more question to askXDXD….let’s say one person enters his video on the 11th of february…and smb else enters another video the 25th of february….it is obvious that the one who entered it earlier would win…so my question is….are u guys counting the views on a video according to a pre-defined timespan? ex: You calculate who had the most views after a week that their videos is posted…etc etc.

• http://www.eangolden.com Ean Golden
Hey one more question…do we have to use the preassigned cue points or we can reassign them as we like?
hey Guys the videos are already looking great!

I would recommend setting your own cue points to create your own unique sound. In terms of the judging style, we have a very cool plan in the works for a judging system that everyone should be happy with. It wont be implemented in time for this contest but will be used in our contests in the future. We plan on holding various contests monthly :)

• Anonymous

You are all wasting your time complaining about the judging.

• Faeruithir

This contest definitely doesn’t seem fair…damn i’d sure like to win a midifighter!

I think there needs to be a change in judging system…

• Zac Kyoti

I agree with the above about the contest being weighted towards those who have been using YouTube longer. Hell, I was so happy to see this until I remembered I don’t even have a video camera, lol! Guess that counts me out. But as soon as I do, I’ll gladly enter these contests (as long as a panel judges). Think about it – a super funny or even super-shiny-slick vid is guaranteed to do do much better than a lo-fi vid with equal talent.

• http://www.immuzikation.com Immuzikation

… shameless…

• http://www.music-selections.com Magic Johnson

Why such a short video, for such a dope mapping? I am not sure I understood it all, and I think I am quite a dj gear geek..

• Silenti

I used to be a member of a online forum which had a “Picture of the Month” contest every month. The way it worked was a thread was opened up at the end of each month, and members could ‘nominate’ ONE picture posted by another member. You couldn’t vote for yourself. After a week, a poll was created with all the nominations and all users could vote on that poll. Winner take all.

The ‘you can’t nominate yourself’ ensured that there wasn’t 1 nomination per user and thus 100′s of pictures to vote on each month. It also made sure that lots of different kinds of pictures were nominated, because everyone has their own taste.

It seemed to be a pretty solid system to me. But I like the idea of the Pro-DJ panel. Maybe for a future contest?

Also.. +1 for korg padKontrol mappings. everyone seems so worked up over the nano controllers, but the padKontrol has native mode!

• Case the Wag

I like 2010′s idea of selecting the winner by “pro dj” judges. Or at least the DJTT staff could select 5-10 nominees and DJTT viewers could vote on the best video.

• 2010

Idea:
DJTT, how about a line up of some Pro DJ’s to be judges.
Being chosen winner amongst peers, it’s like “ehhh..Thanks”and kinda boring…But from a pro DJ panel saying “U Win”..now that would be ultimate sweetness.
Validation from a pro is an amateur’s dream come true..Plus the midi fighter prize, get the pro DJ panel to autograph it and send it to the winner.

It sounds like you feel like this method of judging will not reflect the true value of the video. I might suggest that better videos tend to get shown more, re-posted and shared with others and would therefore get more views. We are not trying to create a popularity contest but instead create an easy way for everyone to see who won. If I judge a contest like this myself then its too subjective, so I wanted to find a way for the numbers to speak for themselves. Unfortunately, views is the best way we thought if to do that. If you can think of a better method, please do share it- and we can try that next time.
Ean, I agree with him…
People who alredy have a youtube channel or account will be far ahead from people who never updated a homemade video.
You could create another blog post at end of the contest period with the 10 Videos that DJTT liked most and open a Pool so we can chose the winner with the best video.
What do you guys think about that?

• ManDingo

ManDingo wants to know when the MidiFighters with the joystick will be availabe. please let him know so that he may put aside some change for it.

• RCUS

@dj broken record: I am almost 100% sure DJTT wouldn’t limit it to a Traktor only contest so don’t let that delay you if you feel inspired to rock out on your software/controller(s) of choice.

• dj broken record

a question – is traktor the required software? what about torq?

• Vince

you should do more contests like this more often with different prizes

• kilbot

nice video and the contest is great idea!
however I have to agree with others, in that regardless of how subjective DJTT staff choosing a winner is, going by video views is a much worse idea.
I understand the appeal for an easy judging system by simply using # of views… but I don’t really see the merit.
I like RCUS’s idea.

I see DJTT is trying to have a cool contest and is being more than generous by offering up a free Midi Fighter!
I hope these complaints of ‘popularity contest’ don’t sour what DJTT is doing! But I do agree that particular way of judging is a very poor way to choose a winner.

• RCUS

I also think that for a smaller contest like this it would be alot easier for people like me who enter to actually watch every entry and then cast my vote.

So again, contestants have one vote, and they can’t vote for themselves. If a contestant doesn’t cast a vote, they are disqualified. You pick the top three based on contestant votes, and another top three based on views/popularity, then DJTT picks winner.

• RCUS

Another solid video Ean! I’m so down to enter but it ain’t happening till after this weekend :/. Hopefully I can get views by then!

As a side note, it’s videos like this that make me want to slap Gerhard from Ableton upside the dome! Would it kill them to just add cuepoints WITHIN clips so I don’t have to fill up 8 clipslots to juggle one track?! Jeez. it’s bad enough that we have to deal with one waveform at a time. It’s a love/hate relationship with me and Ableton…

I am also sweating your shift button on the MF via Traktor. I will just have to wait patiently for four banks mode I guess.

I vote more contests though for sure!! I suppose the other way you can do the voting is to do it like a beatport remix contest? So like, let’s say 6 semi-finalists are chosen total. 3 are chosen by participant votes only and the other 3 are chosen by YouTube popularity/views. The only catch is that for the contestant votes you can’t vote for yourself (not sure how you’d work out the logistics). From the 6 semi-finalists DJTechTools picks the winner. It’s a compromise between popularity and skill.

you are welcome to use any amount or type of controller you want, including the midi-fighter :)

yes- please add turntables and your own style for sure. Any type of control type is welcome. The only rules are:

the video must be uploaded after Feb 1. (older ones dont count)
You must use the songs in my video

is the contest limited to using one controller? and is there any objection to using a MidiFighter to compete in the contest?

thx!

whats going to be exciting is for other 16 button controllers to get the mapping to work. I plan on (if i ever get time and or sleep again) to get the mapping on my trigger finer. without leds to show some parameters, its a little trickier.
I have a 3 layer mode mapping for Trigger Finger, where mode 1 is basic transport, mode 2 is effects, and mode 3 is library. Im going to try and make this mapping be my mode 2.
awesome and inspiring.

while im at it, funny how my brain thinks of this backwards. I would love to get an acapella running straight forward, and then using an instrumental for my cue points so i could make a real time arrangement.
