ps- I guess what I'm in want/need of is a kit that SHOWS me how MIDI circuit boards and controllers are designed... this one would be cool for what I want if there was a little more in depth work that could help me eventually understand and build my own controller... this one is just pretty colored buttons you snap in...
I definently agree. @Ean: What type of microcontroler are you using and what language is the firmware written in?
Never mind. The microcontroler is a AT90USB162 and all of the firmware is written in C. This and more info can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/midifighter/

@andriguous: The midi fighter sends midi signals over usb. If you can find a way to turn those signals into something more useful (ie HID for the pc) then you might be able to get it working to, say, run macros in a video game or start applications. Since the PS3 is even more closed source than windows I think you would have a very long road ahead of you just trying to get the PS3 to accept midi over usb, let alone use it for something.

I know this isn't dj related, but is there anyway to map the midi fighter as a controller for ps3 or pc?
A couple of questions:

i. In the video, the top acrylic plate bows quite obviously when the button is seated (and this pushes the acrylic light pipe out of alignment). How robust is the assembled unit?

ii. Given that the button contacts seem to click in rather than solder, how reliable is the electrical connection?
1) the acrylic is very sturdy and does not bow at all when a button is pressed. It may bow just a bit when you are putting the buttons in the first time because of the extrememe pressure but not under normal use.

2) very reliable- we have had not problems with the first batch of 350.
