After years of experimental music and new control paradigms, Jean Michel Jarre (or “Mj” as he is now known on the European club circuit)  has shifted gears and taken Ibiza by storm with his brand new Wi-mote routine. The AP press quotes him as saying ” Yeah, the groupies are just so much better when your a dj- I really cant ever go back to creating ground breaking music after I discovered the joys of triggering quantized clips in Ableton”

The Real Deal

Ok- I admit it,  we made all that up to give you a good laugh on friday.  Gustavo Bravetti, the dj from Uruguay who is actually performing in the video does an interesting job of demonstrating how a small dash of coordinated controllerism can go a long way. There is a lot of pressure for controllerists to do amazing things that wow and impress your peers but while technical feats may be great for battles and youtube videos, playing in the club requires a more toned down sensibility.  As long as you own the performance and it makes sense in the context of the music- then there IS room for a lot more than just pushing play,  even if that means just involves a pair of wi-motes.

Very cool idea. People love seeing different / outside the box! Nice article guys.

Yeah…..I agree because it can’t be THAT accurate.

Sure…he probably has Quantize activated but i dunno. I would not feel comfortable waving ‘gear’ around.

I thought you needed to point a wii-mote to something to receive the signal?

You can use the Wiimote without pointing it to the Infrared-Bar… It’s got gyroscopes (accelerometer) in it which you can use – but if you want to use it as a mouse for example, then you would need the infrared bar (actually two candles do the job pretty good ;)

    Glovepie and OSCulator.

This is not new, only JMJ is the new “gadget” in the setup.

    xD

I’m wanting two bluetooth pompons for “Chearleader Dj Hero” feat JMJ.

  • http://www.djnvidia.info/ Dj Nvidia

I admit this is pretty cool. Anytime anyone takes something used for something else and re-engineers it to Dj is quite amazing, but I personally don’t think this sounds very good.

Plus the practicality of it is limited to only house and techno tracks. I would have a hard time trying to do this with Hip-Hop, or mainstream music.

But I give him his props anyway, and the crowd seems to be enjoying it, I couldn’t do it though…

  • Fat Elvis

    I also see a P5 Glove at 2:50 along with the Roland’s D Beam.

GlovePIE, more than likely. It supports the Wiimote and the P5 Glove, along with lots of other inputs. That’ll turn “mad waving of the arms” into MIDI, and from there something like Hubi’s Loopback Device to route the MIDI back to an app.

Bome’s MIDI Translator or even GlovePIE itself will allow scripting and variables to give the “mad waving” a little more structure and conditional control over parameters.

  • Fickala Musoterual

He plays good techno at least!

  • Anonymous

The man has stage presence, and that’s never a bad thing. They see him interacting with the sounds directly and they are feeding off of it, and then that kick comes in and it’s mayhem.

Would this work in a dark club? Probably not, but it’s perfect for that setting.

  • DJ Elvis

I’m saw a lot of bad replys about the presentation, but to be true this is just jealous arguments.

Im esence the most important thing is to please the public ! if the crowd is dancing, if the promoter is hapy if the bar sold out, you make the gig , you wort your maoney. Monkey DJ or Paper Wheight DJ this don´t mather, if know you public, and make they happy.

To me Gustavo was perfect, know exactly whats was doing, even if that means take advantage of the adctives in the crowd mind. congratulations,

By the in 6:50 min you can here Brazilian people talking about someting in october, make sme wonder if are this a Brazilian movie? or even Brazilian folt that goes to Urugay enjoy this party (very usual to clubbers of south)

    Let see the controversia ahead

Personally, I am not into waving wi-motes around a club but its clearly working for this guy. Walking into the crowd with a guitar hero was as far as I would take “toys” but it was still a lot of fun and fairly challenging to pull off.

Sure, the video does comes off as a little cheesy. Doesn’t everything at a day party filled with ecstasy though? Then again, transfer any night time club activity into the daylight and you have created instant cheese.

That’s nightlife for you though, a little cheesy but super fun to watch when your slightly toasted. So in that context this performance worked well- the crowd ate it up and he probably got booked again.

On one hand, I was poking fun just a little bit with this article but on the other hand its a good example of how something easy can really wow a crowd. So go out, take that knowledge, and do something on your own that works better.

  • DJ Big Q

I just don’t get it, I guess some folks can get people to dancing to anything, and thats just to much work, I feel sorry if he catches a cramp while doing that. Oh well to each its own.

  • justin

For a very short while I used the P5 glove in a few live sets around 5 years ago. But I stopped, since it’s by far not accurate enough and you end up looking like a complete tool.
The wiimote is more accurate, but you still look like an idiot. And so does this guy.

  • Fatlimey
The wiimote is more accurate, but you still look like an idiot. And so does this guy.
OK, instead of saying “that looked crap”, how about taking the idea and doing something actually good with it. How can you turn that into a real crowd pleaser? Can you add in a projection system to illustrate your controller moves? Take the MIDI events you’re generating and display them as lighting changes, so people can see you’re not just checking Email.

It’s not that he’s using a Wiimote to DJ with, it’s that he’s trying something new. And all you people can say is “well he looked a bit of a twat”. Sure, but at least he’s doing something. What did you innovate today?

  • Rafael

I think this place is Santa Catarina – Brazil!!!! Many raves and parties have the same structure… and someone speaks in portuguese as well!!

Hi Dj Tech Tools people, Hi Ean, i`ve been reading your site since the beginning i must say your job is amazing, all the techniques and reviews posted here are always usefull and fun to read.

As Uruguayian I know Gustavo for a long time, and i`ve seen his career grow, he`s been musician before dj, composed many many tracks, produced music for other people, and now he`s having a very sucessfull moment with the “Alternative Controllers” show.

I think people here tend to critizise based on personal taste on music, i dont agree many times with the music Gustavo plays, but i must admit that he`s an amazing producer, and of course he is innovating here, like it or not. BTW what is the difference of playing “born slippy nuxx” as gustavo does or “We will Rock You” as ean does, i dont play neither, and i dont say that ean job is this or that, just respect his work and the fact that he is sharing his knowledge as gustavo does too, just google him and find many you tube links with ableton “amazing” tutorials and articles for well known electronic musician web sites.

As an example, he have created the “bend -/+” button for ableton in the past, thing they added later in ableton releases, And he`s is currently working “with” Ableton and “for” Native Instruments, much more as many of us have achived too.

To BennyBlanco: The Depeche Mode Remix is Gustavo`s own unpublished remix, you can chek it on his My Space: http://www.myspace.com/gustavobravetti

Of course you could say “this guy is gustavo`s friend or he`s proud of this guy`s work because is from his counry” both things are True BUT if this video were about some international known artist as hawtin, zabiela, just to put some examples, i think some people here wouldnt being so rude.

Thanks for that comment Edu and the additional background on your friend. Your spot on with the comment, but I want to point out that generally speaking this site does a very good job at focusing on the techniques of a performance and not nitpicking each others musical style. If you spend any time in the forum, you will find a really wide range of dj styles getting along perfectly well that would never interact otherwise. Everything from Industrial, hip hop, trance and beyond.

I am sorry but I am not sure who or what your criticizing here. Me, Dj TechTools? Sure wi-motes in a club are not new and this video is certainly not new either, but I felt the performance might inspire others to do something similar. That is why we publish articles, not only in talking about cutting edge developments but to explore good ideas and inspire each other to do better.

Great hating while being anonymous man!

But if you want to keep the hating alive, be sure to stay clear ferom the DJTechtools website in the future okay? ;)

I hear Ean’s comment of not being a fan doing a routine like this in a regular club, though on a stage like this, Gustavo gets away with it, and the crowd seems to love it.

To remind most people of a DJs main purpose, entertaining the crowd!

If the crowd has a blast with these routines, give it to them!

  • Lemur is tits BUT

Ean your great man but JMJ isnt innovative… Controlling beat repeat and filter parameters through a new medium qualifies as innovative now in days? I think not, especially when it sounds like some drunk random who wont lay off the roll on the djm800… He traded Quality of music to wave his hands in the air.. Its not like he cant produce. What would you rather see someone do live? Something sick like Ean and use breakdowns to juggle loops and create unique handmade mashs etc or some whacky JMJ waving his arms creating the dreaded and cliche stagnant fx over drone that won’t die and is being performed poorly.

    Who trades content for cheese?

  • Ehssan
am i the only one who thinks this is great?
Nope, I’m with you. I think that’s a pretty unique and amazing act. Seriously if you were at that festival watching him perform this act, you’d love it. Mostly for the crowd interaction and ingenuity factor. And the build ups are fantastic.

I’ve been to a fair few festivals in OZ and never seen anyone do anything like this. I’d pay to see it live for sure.

back on topic i personally njoy this i think this is great, its not so much innovation as djing with a wiimote is been out there since the wii came out, but its different its fresh, some people dont like the gimmick cool, some people do , i think the more fresh u can keep ur act the better

  • Hedge

What is the Drum Controller he used around 6:00 ?

I found the performance quite interesting and the crowd liked it so everything is fine.
People like him push DJing to another level and I wonder why people here are so upset about him looking dumb.
I’m rather sick of the German DJ-scene insisting on either spinning vinyl or using a DVS.

After seeing all this comments on this article i wanted to leave a positive comment,
it’s sad to see that a lot of people just don’t get it,it’s not about the we controllers so much,it’s the concept of what can be done .
I found Bravetti a few months back and became a fan,i think he puts a tremendous show .

I wish the comments were all in a positive and inspiring way so we can all learn .
