Serato Releases SSL 1.9.0

serato-screen1-9-0

By: Monika.mhz

April has marked a big month for Serato.  With the announcement of the SL-3 kicking it all off, Serato followed up with the official release of 1.9.0 on Monday.  The dedicated fanboys and fangirls have been waiting since January and now Serato has finally served up the goods.  Scratch Live 1.9 has some major changes that definitely warrant the version rollover from 1.8 to 1.9.  We’ve already discussed Scratch Live 1.9 briefly during Winter NAMM 2009.   I have been using 1.9 extensively throughout the beta process and am happy to report why you need to upgrade.

  • SP-6 Sample Player:
A sample player with choice as to which deck to drop it in.  There is no pitch adjust on this sample player, but DJs everywhere rejoiced when Scratch Live announced the ominous sounding SP-6.  May dance floors everywhere enjoy the air horn once again.
  • Improved MIDI:
Serato doesn’t discuss this in the release notes but 1.9 has drastically improved MIDI performance.  A relatively new player in MIDI control, only supporting MIDI officially for less than a year, they have done very well listening to users  and adding user requests (with exception of audio scrubbing).  When MIDI was first introduced into Scratch Live many users complained about latency and Jitter, some even reporting shocking numbers in comparison to competitors.  These reports caused a lot of performers to shy away from Scratch Live as a serious solution for MIDI.
Version 1.9 wipes the slate clean, tosses away the dragging feeling from previous versions, and gives MIDI a competitive precision.  Cue points feel snappy, pitch adjust feels dead on, loops are precise, and effects are other words for ‘good’ as well!  If you have no other reason to upgrade to 1.9, this is it!  With such a drastic change in performance any DJ will be happy with the snappy difference!
  • Live Feed:
Probably the most innovative part of Scratch Live is it’s ability to use time code to control live audio.  Plugging in an audio signal into the microphone port on the SL-1 allows the DJ to load a “live feed” track onto any deck, and control it with vinyl.  Live vinyl control of ANY “Live” (hint hint) feed into Scratch Live.  Stay tuned for more from DJ Tech Tools on this feature.  We see many great things from this in the future.

1.9 also features:

  • improved history
  • a loop roll effect for those who feel like glitching their music or rolling over a vocal,
  • key tag support,
  • album art,
  • bigger BPM and pitch presentations on the screen,
  • and tons of bug fixes and features we didnt even touch!

SSL 1.9.0 is available as a free download at serato.com

I knew there would be a reason to love SSL again. Controlling a live audio signal…Phenominal!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://youtube.com/imfromthafutur imfromthafutur

How far back can you rewind and then scratch? What functions can be used with the live signal? Please explain this further if ya know what I'm getting at.

The Live Feed stores a full 1 minute of audio before it's written over.

  • Darrin

above all features that are new to 1.9.0 – live feed is so dope. in fairness, other programs have many of these features taht are just now being added to Scratch Live

  • tobamai

Darrin you win the award for most level headed SSL fan!

Also, I think "50% more airhorn" is the best way to describe the sampler.

  • Mr JesC

Good article Monika, this is really pushing me to get a SSL box! I love the air horn, but I need more cowbells!

  • dj erik t

i come here for the jokes! Our siren just broke at our club. we have a 2 confetti cannons, 8 large plasma screens, a bubble machine, but we're still pissed we haven't had a siren for 3 weeks. One of my co-workers will buy this based on the SP-6 alone.

  • http://www.redlinehookah.com Mr Bitches

    50% MORE AIRHORN.

    you guys are silly

  • midifidler

Live feed is a dope feature!

  • dirtyred

So this live feed feature will only be available to SL1 users as the new SL3 nolonger has a mic input?

  • http://www.myspace.com/officialmonikamhz Monika.mhz
So this live feed feature will only be available to SL1 users as the new SL3 nolonger has a mic input?
Absolutely not! The SL-3 will use the AUX inputs to draw from, and the TTM 57SL uses the AUX input on the mixer!

The live feed is available to any level of user of serato!

Talk about midi sync with ableton Live and Live Feed.

Talk about new plug for Ableton Live sending "scrubbing" to live clips.

    Talk.

    …
Mudo. There is no simple technique to do any of these things. There are a few devices out there like the SoundBITE Micro that will help it easier to MIDI sync. And there is currently no official plug-in to "scrub" clips in Ableton using SSL. You can always route your Ableton output into SSL and scrub the audio using Live feed. I know everyone is anxious for the big announcement from either Ableton or Serato, but keep in mind it took three years before Cycling '74 and Ableton announced the fruits of their labor. It will take some time before we see any major announcements from either camp.

However there sure are several "hacks" you can use to start syncing up the two right now, but they're dirty, involve several sound cards, lots of cables and sometimes a few laps around the DJ booth. I really recommend taking a deep breath and waiting till you hear some new news!

hmmm SERATO…. I've played with serato gc couple times I like it.. I've been thinking of getting it.. now it seems it might come true after this update…

    Agrees!

Airhorns are great, cowbells the bomb! :D

Nice write up! And Serato finally drops some of the newer goods in!

  • Kornais Francois

I just bought a SL3..The unit is louder and sounds warmer than Audio 8 or SL1. Easy to hook up too. I like Serato because it is old skool, solid as a rcok, classic style dj'in with a modern touch. I got my mixer for all the fx n filters. I heard a 3rd virtual deck is in da works..for aux out 3.

How has the midi improved in SSL 1.9.0?

Some things I noticed: now all loop amount values can be set for example to a knob and rotating the knob adjusts the loop amount. Also loop on and loop roll can be set to midi..Loop roll can can go as low as 1/32! Sampler triggers can be also set to midi..

    Dear Monica,

Do these two things are now possible without maxforlive (but trought pure data) and Live8 recognizes midi from Serato but actually is not working.

Syncing Clock from Serato to Live is the first "new" implementation and some kind of "native" plug or max patch for directly clip scrubbing is already possible and programable (but it is possible that Rane prefer integrate ITCH before SSL).

The question is not how hard to do is (because I know how to), the question is why to pay for something which is relative free (Pure Data integration inside ableton) or relative cheap (Ms. Pinky Maxmsp based and delivered with sdk) and how Ableton Serato will do their "handshake" for keep closed what is FREE?

The worst thing in this situation becomes when the Freedom will be the way to GROW UP altogether but the corps are afraid to free (or cheap) creativity.

I'm not ansious, I'm bored about waiting something that is already done.

Nope. The myth of Ableton 8 receiving Serato signals is not true. Being an owner of both software and being someone who uses both consistently live, I can say, unfortunately, the two are not already sync-able. And of course maxforlive is not released to the public as of yet.

If you've got a method for syncing the two please share, I'm sure the community would be excited to see the two linked up!

Along the lines of what I discuss in the article. The latency and jitter experienced by some SSL users is not gone and MIDI feels tighter and smoother.

After reading this again, I thought I'd mention that this is a great point. Once we see the end result of the Serato/Ableton team-up (and if in fact it means integrating SSL into Ableton). it will be interesting to see if they in fact will be integrating it on a level that maxforlive will not be capable of doing. As they will have to be competitive to people making maxforlive plug-ins for Traktor and the like.

Unfortunately, until we see maxforlive released or a Serato/Ableton press release we'll just have to wait and see!

  • http://www.myspace.com/tooltablist Mudo

    Hi again Monica,

I know is not possible to sync them up but when you plug Serato and run Ableton in MIDI PREFERENCES you could see MIDI IN PORTS.

    Maybe a bug?

Serato could send midi out time clock and Live could listen it (if it is not released at this time but it is completely possible, look at traktor please)

About integrating Ms. Pinky object (or the Serato Object for PD that is in the internet) it is perfectly possible if Ableton wants (of course) and Live Feed is a bit maxmsp "patching" over the new LOOPER ableton instrument.

    Maybe they are offset?

    Competition?

DVS are outdated, ITCH is the new "flava" (and HID the solution for all)

This is how Corps (RANE Serato) are working. Leaving the vinyl or… maybe they (ableton Serato and BabytalkFX) listened any of my advice/mail/internet noise (like this)…

I'm wrong? then Serato is lost…

I'm right? then Live Serato are handshaking for keep "their" system closed and unique.

It's not hate, it's boring… It must be done since Cycling+Ableton partnership. Serato needs some "developers"… maybe they could give a job for Scott Wardle.

I need a job too but maybe I make anything really free with Pure Data… I'm so tired to wait, It could be better start studing PD in 2002 instead wait and wait and wait for developers.

I can't see why anyone would want to run traktor into Live. Traktor's one up on SSL is it's filters and MIDI ability. Once you have Ableton Live why would you want Traktor's filters? Traktor is bloated and poor preforming these days. The SSL/traktor component of the equation is just to give a familiar mixing system to DJs and to remove the need to spend hours and hours trying to Warp tracks accurately. Personally I'm looking at Torq/Ms. Pinky as were to go now. With Ms. Pinky's SDK your truely limited only but your imagination (and coding skill) with MAX for live the possibilities just get endless.

    O and a side note Serato 1.9's SP-6 doesn't sync/pitch adjust does it?

So will this Work well with the VCI-100 and will we need to switch back to the firmware 1.2 or can we stay with firmware 1.3 if we can use the VCI-100? I wonder why they don't include the samplers in all the programs, Airhorns, TruckHorns, Sirens, Glass Break, Screaming, Whistlers, the clap, a Smack, and other various sounds. It would be better to do that you know like have like a side or bottom bar with a play button with a selector that will allow you to select the sound and play it that way it would end up on a mix that you are recording from within the program. So is SSL that way, or it only has a few horns and thats it?

Great Thread! The thing to really remember about this update is the SL-1 users got the software portion for free, and we will get all future ones the same way!
