Create the Drum Roll Effect

This question was raised in the forum and is also important for future owners of the VCI-100SE (which has drum roll built in). In this video I demonstrate how to create the drum roll effect in Traktor 3 by using just 2 buttons set to “Set Loop” and “loop end move backward”. The trick is in getting your Traktor settings right and then its easy to create perfect drum rolls that will drive the crowd wild. That is until you do it 20 times in one night at which point they will most likely riot.

How about, you cut the loop short and bend the pitch and overlay all that with a flanger (70-80% amt).

    Excellent video!

I use all 4 of the little black buttons for Loop Start Fwd, Loop Start Bwd, Loop end fwd, loop end bwd.

I find the Start bwd is great for building a drum roll right before the next phrase of a song kicks in, such as the chorus.

Good work. I’ve done this by re-organizing the loop-length buttons. The top one does 4 beat loops, the second is 8 beat. the third is loop length double and the fourth is loop end half.

I set my sync buttons to hold instead of toggle and added snap(hold) to them so that the loops are right on the beat, but with snap off immediately after.

well i don’t use the vci - 100 yet but i set traktor up to do this with an axiom controller. i actually like to set a 4 - 8 bar loop then drop that bar down to a 1 bar loop, then turn on the beat mangler effect and adjust the gate of the beat mangler with a knob, and change the loop end length at the same time a button. at the peak of the gated drum roll i turn off the loop and beat mangler effect at the same time. which is really cool because if you set it up right with another track playing or start your loop on the right beat once you turn the loop and fx off it drops back in on time.
