Setting up gear in the club

YouTube Preview Image

After many questions and some confusion about how I actually set up my gear and play in clubs I put together this video to show you a typical gig. I recorded an explanation of the gear and connections while setting up in a San Francisco club and then demonstrate some of the ways you could map the Novation SL25 to Traktor 3 after the show was over.

How do YOU mix- Inside or outside?

mixer-attack.jpg

Not inside or outside the house smart guy, inside or outside the computer! If the right controller was out there, would you like it to control all the functions inside the software including mixing? Or, would you prefer to mix on a real mixer and use all the functions of devices like the VCI-100 for other purposes?

How To: fix a stiff jog wheel on the VCi-100

VCI-100 DIY

One of our readers that goes by SGB has posted a very well done walk through on how to fix a jog wheel that feels too stiff. You can download detailed instructions with pictures here (direct link). While we are on the subject of DIY projects this might be a good time to also bring back this tutorial on adding arcade buttons to a VCI-100. If you have anything like this that you feel the community here at dj tech tools would benefit from DONT hessitate to let us know. I know many of you might be afraid to take apart some very expensive dj gear but trust me, its really hard to break this one so have fun and come up with your own MOD!

Free Beta Test Anyone?

serato-video-beta.png

A few years back getting onto the beta-test team of a new dj software meant some serious bragging rights. “Yeah, I got the advance copy of final scratch 1.1.3.5.6.7 , it only crashes about 5 times per hour now, I’m sooo cool.” Then everyone jumped on the open source Linux bandwagon basically saying, “hell, why not let everyone try the damn thing- then we can really find some bugs and not rely on a hand full of lazy beta testors” So lately many companies including Albleton and Serato have allowed users to downlaod new versions in advance. The only catch was they dont really advertise it and you have to know where to look. That trend continues today as at this very moment you can download 2 very cool beta’s including:

1} Serato Scratch Video

Thats right, for free you can get your hands on a demo version of what will be a very hot piece of $180 software. The only catch, you need to own the very expensive TTM-57SL or the software will not work at all. Just follow this link here to download the beta

2} DeckADance for MAC

After an unfortunate accident that left the company without its founder and creator, this new and exciting software has rebounded and is set to release the OSX version of its promising dj software. No hardware required just go here to download the public beta.

Controllerism basics: Cue Point Juggling

japan.jpg

By now a few of you may have seen my performance at the Vestax Extravaganza in Tokyo. Several people on stage all said the same thing: “Man, none of us could figure out what the hell you are doing in your videos, we thought we could figure it out by being here- now we really have no idea!” Although I certainly did step up the level of performance for that gig the core principles are very simple and have not changed in several years. Everything in the Japan video is just different ways of “cue point juggling” or jumping between different points in a song instantly. There are 2 different kinds of cue point juggling: direct play and sample play.
